Campus Ministry

The campus ministry of Sheldon Jackson College welcomes your company as together we embrace opportunities for education, spiritual growth and fellowship.

The history of Sheldon Jackson College is also the story of the home mission movement of the Presbyterian Church, USA dating back over 128 years. With the help of our Church Partners that continue their support for our college, the contemporary church related liberal arts campus enjoys an ecumenical spirit, inviting individuals with a broad spectrum of beliefs (or lack thereof) to experience worship and to participate in dialogue together in community. We are proud of our heritage and the legacy of the Reformed movement. You will find that the climate on campus is one that celebrates holistic education and student leadership. We strive to challenge body, mind and spirit, in a climate that encourages respect and affirmation for religious conviction and practice.

Spiritual growth opportunities on campus range from worship services, to fellowship events, to educational presentations. Many of these events are student-led. Others involve faculty, staff, visiting guests and local clergy. The chapel services are every weekday morning before classes begin. In addition, the campus community gathers one evening night of the week for a special service especially for college students. Students are encouraged to attend as little or as much as they find accommodates their schedule. Many find participation in a local congregation satisfying.

Given our unique location, students at Sheldon Jackson College have ample opportunities to serve and learn in a setting that is multi-cultural. Local opportunities for community service range from local organizations that emphasize human services to outreach ministries for middle-schoolers and high schoolers. Special off campus trips along the Inside Passage expose learners of all ages to the people and places within Southeast Alaska. The needs around us are great; but so is the chance to meet new friends and learn new ways from peoples whose culture dates back for thousands of years.

Finally, the student coming to Sheldon Jackson College should sense that they are valued and appreciated. Pastoral care is extended to our students in the caring way that makes a small campus personal. This ethic is the goal of our entire campus. Our students receive pastoral care from our Chaplain and regular advise from teachers, administrators, and our adult mission volunteers and as importantly, from one another. We invite you to come and be a part of community life in a setting that is both inspirational and academic.
